On May 28, 1923 a cooperative meeting of the Pastors and Deacons of the First, Southside and Green Street Baptist Churches was held to consider the possibility of organizing a Sunday School in the northern section of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The fruit of this meeting was a series of evangelistic services held in the Fremont School building with Dr. W. L. Ball, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, preaching. As a result a church was born!
Calvary Baptist Church was constituted on June 15, 1924. On Monday, June 16, 1924 the Spartanburg Herald carried the front page headline, "Calvary Baptist, with 93 Members, Organized Here."
Rev. C. E. Vermillion began as the first pastor of Calvary on August 17, 1924. Under his leadership the future of Calvary was shaped. Over the years Calvary Baptist Church has called 10 men to serve as pastor. Under all of these men Calvary has experienced "the good hand of God" upon them as a body.
Today Calvary continues to be a place where God is giving much. In fact, this is a place where every day people come to experience grace that is still amazing. God's provision and blessing is certainly felt in every facet of the church.
Thankfully God's grace at Calvary is not only in our past...it's also in our future. On June 1, 2008 through God's blessing and leadership Calvary took an unprecedented step of faith. That step was a decision to relocate Calvary to a new campus. These are exciting days at the church with many opportunities and blessings.
God holds so much in the future for us and the future generations. His provision of this exciting opportunity of relocating has put Calvary Baptist Church in a position for a great work of God to take place in our midst. Our response is the key. His gifts require much of us.
our target
The church exists for only one purpose: to spread the fame of God. It is our desire to accurately reflect our Heavenly Father to everyone with whom we come into contact. This contact may be casual or formal; it may be on the street or at our campus. No matter what the circumstance, we want everyone to walk away with the right impression of God.
If people have the right idea about God, then they will have the right idea about us. We are a people who love others because God first loved us; we serve others because God serves us; we care about the needs of others because God has always been faithful to care for our needs.
If you walk away from this encounter thinking, "Boy, they sure impressed me," then we have not done a very good job of letting you know that what is most important to us is not us, but God!
In making God big and us small, we believe that we all are on the right path to hitting the target of making God the center of everything in our lives. We just can't get over how great and good God is!
our core values
worship that is GOD-EXALTING
Worship is a verb and therefore involves us living a life that is worth something. We believe God desires His children to actively worship Him with every part of our being. The Biblical record proves that God is the only object worthy of honor and praise.
discipleship that is CROSS-CENTERED
Growth is an absolute necessity both physically and spiritually. We provide avenues through which the family will grow spiritually. Our textbook is the Bible, and we are committed to providing preaching and teaching that encourages spiritual maturity. Our example is Jesus and He calls us to embrace a life that is centered on the cross.
fellowship that is GRACE-FOCUSED
No man can exist alone. God created us to be relational and to enjoy other people's company. Every day you face people who are against you. At Calvary we believe in a dynamic of fellowship where you will find people who are for you. Grace always gives us another chance. We believe that our interaction with each other is all about grace.
outreach that is WORLD-IMPACTING
Can man live apart from God? No! When God is left our of your life chaos is the norm; when God is a part of your life peace is the norm. Jesus came and died so that we might have a relationship with God. God's forgiveness is available and made active by grace through repentant faith. This forgiveness impacts lives right now for eternity!
